Over the past month, I’ve been critical of the Pittsburgh Steelers and head coach Mike Tomlin, who were riding a three-game losing streak which included losses to the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots when each team only had two wins.
Many, including myself, were fed up with the Steelers, ready to write them off, hoping the Cincinnati Bengals would provide the 4th-straight loss that put them out of their misery.
But that didn’t happen. A surprising 34-11 win over the Bengals, followed by a win at the Seattle Seahawks, where they had not won since Ronald Reagan’s first term in the White House, and then beat a Baltimore Ravens team resting key starters in bad weather to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Then, the Tennessee Titans, with nothing to play for and ready to fire Mike Vrabel, beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, helping the Steelers clinch one of the final playoff spots in the AFC, which had me preparing to eat a Sunday dinner of crow.
Regardless of what happens in Buffalo this Sunday, head coach Mike Tomlin keeps his streak of non-losing seasons intact, while getting this team, which I called “mediocre” in a previous post, which I’m willing to call “average” after the past few weeks, into the playoffs.
Pro football can be a funny game, and it appears Tomlin for now is getting the last laugh.
